EMDR Trauma Processing Therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative trauma processing therapy that has been proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health concerns.

EMDR has gained recognition from organizations such: as the World Health Organization, the US Department of Defence and the American Psychiatric Association. EMDR functions a bit like Rapid Eye Movement cycle that occurs during sleep which helps with memory processing and storage. EMDR is done while you’re awake and is facilitated by a trained therapist who uses an empirically validated protocol to ensure the treatment’s efficiency and effectiveness.

Research shows that EMDR is successful in helping people with concerns such as:

• Anxiety - Panic, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety
• Depression and mood concerns
• Complicated grief
• Single incident (car accident, natural disaster, assault, etc.) and complex trauma (childhood abuse, neglect, and/or chronic relational trauma)
• Sexual assault
• Performance concerns
• Disordered eating and body image concerns

How does EMDR trauma processing therapy work?

EMDR trauma processing therapy is based on the theory that the brain is hard-wired for our survival. However, sometimes memory storage is blocked by trauma and/or unmet developmental needs. EMDR can help desensitize and reintegrate memories in order to get the brain’s own healing process back on track. The goal is not to forget memories, but to have peace with them; to get comfortable with the present and confident in the future.

Clients often say things like, “That was terrible, but it is over”, “I can see the event, but it feels far away and I feel safe”, or “There’s more to me than that experience.” EMDR has the ability to change the effects of trauma and through it, your relationship with the traumatic experience.

EMDR can help you live a life without the recurring painful thoughts and memories.  It can help you look back on an event in your life that shook your world and observe it as opposed to being overwhelmed by it. Research has found that people can experience the benefits of what once took psychotherapy years to make a difference in a much shorter time.

How long does EMDR take?

The answer to this question will vary depending on the client and their past experiences of trauma, their current life circumstances, their support system, and their current level of functioning. One or more sessions are necessary to first allow the therapist to learn about the client’s history, go over grounding and soothing skills, and choose a place to begin targeting with EMDR. It typically takes between four to six sessions per targeted memory to begin noticing shifts in how you are feeling about that particular memory.
